Investors Buy $32 Billion in Treasury Bills with ZERO Yield
Tuesday, December 9, 2008 15:26Today’s treasury auction outlined the panic that still dominates the financial markets. $36 Billion in T-Bills were auctioned off today which gave a 0% yield. Why would anyone be willing to make an investment in which they are guaranteed to make nothing? The one word answer is “Fear.”
Because treasury bills are direct obligations of the United States Government, they are viewed in the financial world as a “Risk-Free” investment (Not that I fully agree). Investors are essentially giving up a return on their investment in exchange for safety. 0% treasury yields are not a good sign. It shows complete distrust in riskier asset classes such as stocks or bonds, but even in safer assets classes such as bank deposits and cash.
Short Term Yields Move With Stocks
The chart below illustrates the relationship between short term treasury yields (1 month T-bills) and stocks (S&P 500 Index). Though the relationship is not a perfect correlation, we can see that they do tend to move together. The reason is that as investors become fearful, they move their money out of stocks (causing stock prices to drop) and into safe investments such as treasuries (causing treasury prices to rise and yields to fall). I always encourage watching the treasury market closely, as the investors tend to be the smart money (Large institutions, Governments, etc.)

Wow, 0% return on my investment, where can I sign up for that! You would think people with the means to aquire a cumulative total of $32 Billion would have the sense to buy gold or silver or cattle or good farm land or SOMTHING that will yield over 0% percent. The dollar is now backed up only by a printing press and T-bills are not far behind. I think we are in for a rocky ride.

If the US Treasury can print a $1 BOND, then they could easily print a $1 BILL! Why do we need a FEDERAL RESERVE that prints our money and CHARGES INTEREST that we must pay, when the US Treasury could do the same thing INTEREST FREE?

When you buy T bills, you have to pay taxes on these. Your better off stuffing your money in your mattress or buying gold coins to weather the current economic crisis.
If there were any REAL justice, Henry Paulson would be in jail and Bush Co. would be tried for war crimes.

правительству США, ФРСом, которые просто напечатали деньги.И взамен как гарантию они взяли облигации. Ну какой нормальный инвестор, которому нужна прибыль купит бумагу за доллары, если % прибыли нет. Вот вы ктонибудь купите бумагу за 1000 руб, если вам скажут что через 10 лет вам эту 1000 же и вернут?

the government USA, banker who have simply printed the money.And in lieu thereof as warranty they have taken to bonds. Well what normal investor, which needs profit buy the paper for dollars if % arrived no. Here is you anyone bathe the paper for 1000 hack if you will say that in 10 years you this 1000 and is returned?

Вконтакте – мой любимый сайт! Я бы даже сказала, что он полностью отражает мою сущность – любою открытое общение, новые знакомства, юмор, музыку. Мне хочется, чтобы на моей странице все было красиво.
