U.S. jobless claims surge to 26 Year High

First-time claims for state unemployment benefits spiked last week to 626,000, the highest level in over 26 years. The number rose by 35,000 from the previous week.

The number is sharply above Wall Street’s expectations of 580,000. 2009 Should may to be a record year for job losses.
