ahmadinejadContrary to the claims of our own mainstream US media, the presidential election in Iran is shaping up to be a landslide victory for Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Press TV, the state run Iranian news services, reports that preliminary results (20% counted) have Ahmadinejad leading by almost 70% of the vote followed by the western friendly Mir-Hossein Mousavi who has 28%

An interesting fact is that the election in Iran drew a 70% turnout, which is twice the normal turnout for our Presidential elections. Embarrassing statistic for us, the “Champions of Democracy.”

[Update 1 -  5:50pm EST] Fox News is incorrectly reporting that the state run Iranian news service has declared Ahmadinejad the winner. They haven’t. They still have 70%+ of the ballots to count, though it does look like a landslide for the incumbent. Fox News is already alleging election fraud. Where were they in 2000?

[Update 2 -  9:08pm EST] Press TV is now reporting a landslide victory for Ahmadinejad with 68% of the votes counted.
