Jefferson County, AL Can’t Make $636 million Debt Payment

Alabama’s Jefferson County is unable to make a $636 million sewer debt payment due Friday. The county will hold an emergency meeting to vote on an extension request which they hope will buy some time.

The US government has given Citigroup $45 billion in direct cash injections while guaranteeing another $291 billion of the banks toxic (worthless) assets. Citi’s cost to the taxpayer now totals $336 billion.

Ecuador Defaults Again, Refuses to Pay Interest Payment on 2nd Bond

After only a few days since his countries default, Ecuadorian President Raphael Correa has again announced that he will not make the interest payment on a second bond. Ecuador is now in default of $60 million of interest payments. Correa, an American educated Economist, has declared the debt illegal.

Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa officially announced that he will not be making the interest payments on his foreign bonds. The country has officially defaulted on its debt obligations. This is the second Ecuadorian default in ten years.

Tribune Co. Going Bankrupt

Tribune Co. may be filing for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy next week, as advertising revenues tumbled.The company has $1.5 billion due in interest payments on debt due over the next 8 months and won’t have the cash to make good. Tribune has hired Lazard to prepare the bankruptcy filings.
